In honor of National Poetry Month, I want to share one of my favorites.

Halfway Down

Halfway down the stairs
is a stair'where I sit.
There isn't any
other stair
quite like
it.
I'm not at the bottom,
I'm not at the top;
So this is the stair
where
I always
stop.

Halfway up the stairs
isn't up
and isn't down.
It isn't in the nursery,
it isn't in the town.
And all sorts of funny thoughts
run round my head:
"It isn't really
anywhere!
It's somewhere else
instead!"

--A. A. Milne (from When We Were Very Young)

In the realm of great poetry, it probably doesn't deserve a mention. But all poetry doesn't have to have deep meaning and provoke profound thought. Sometimes it's ok for it to just make us smile. And this makes me smile.

And because it's Wednesday and therefore no real reason at all, here is another favorite from Mr. Milne

Six

When I was One
I was just begun.

When I was Two
I was nearly new.

When I was Three
I was hardly me.

When I was Four
I was not much more.

When I was Five
I was just alive.

But now I am Six and clever as clever.
I think I'll stay Six forever and ever.

(from Now We Are Six)

Enjoy your day. However old you are.

I think I'd just about forgotten these two, what with all the stodgy, grown-up poetry that got hammered into my little brain in school. Thanks for reminding me of them, and for the smiles.

I'd forgotten how much I loved those poems as a child. Thanks for sharing them!

I know I'm late to the party, but now I have Kermit singing "halfway down" stuck in my stairs. Or maybe it was Kermit's nephew, Robin. Either way, it's a muppett song that's now stuck in my head :-)

Happy Sunday!  I am sitting here working on my sweater made with the cashmere yarn my husband gave me for my birthday last year. I’m further...
